How many instances make a plague? Survivors of the nice polio plagues of the NINETEEN FORTIES and '50s won't ever consider that during the U.S... the common toll in the ones years was "just one" sufferer out of each 5,000 folks. Was that truly all it took to scare the country out of its wits, sending households scurrying in all directions--to the mountains, to the desert, to Europe--in useless desire of sanctuary.

Perhaps polio's different name, childish paralysis, had one thing to do with it. Photographs of small children in wheelchairs and toddlers on crutches are inclined to skew one's belief. And simpla far offy in case...
